Embracing the Cold Start

When I was in college, February always seemed to drag on forever. The cold felt endless, the days were short, and the promise of spring seemed so far away. After the rush of the new year, January hit like a cold slap, filled with snow, ice, and an overwhelming stack of assignments.
This month was the bridge between winter and the final push toward spring, and I often found myself struggling to stay motivated. This time of year became my “cold start”. Just like a car in the morning, I couldn’t jump straight into full speed. The cold left me sluggish, and I had to give myself some time to warm up. I had to ease into the semester, giving myself the proper time to adjust. It wasn’t just about pushing through, but it was about balance. I learned that rest, good meals, and focused study sessions helped me stay on track while I navigated the winter months.
One quote I found particularly inspiring during that time was, “Flowers that bloom in winter are stronger than flowers that bloom in summer.” This resonated deeply with me because If I let the winter months hold me back, I wouldn’t be able to work as hard toward my goals. The cold could either be a setback or a chance to grow stronger. Despite the chill and the stress of schoolwork, I chose to keep moving forward. That winter, I made a conscious effort to stay steady, to rest when needed, and to study efficiently. By the time midterms came around, I felt prepared and capable, and eventually, spring break came after.
The cold start may have slowed me down, but it also made me stronger. I realized that with the right mindset and a bit of patience, even the coldest months could lead to personal growth and success.
